What to Prepare Before a First Consultation

When a company reaches out for a first consultation about industrial inventory automation, the conversation often starts with a general question: “Where do we begin?” The answer depends on what you bring to the table. A consultation is most productive when both sides have a clear picture of the current setup, the pain points, and the constraints. Without that context, the discussion stays abstract and the next steps remain vague.

Before scheduling a call, take an hour to gather three things: a list of the systems you currently use for inventory tracking, a rough count of SKUs or material types you manage, and a note about any recurring issues — like mismatched stock counts, delayed order fulfillment, or manual data entry that eats up hours each week. This information gives the consultant a concrete starting point. It also helps you articulate what you actually need, rather than guessing at a solution.

Another piece that matters is the physical layout of your warehouse or distribution center. If you have multiple storage zones, different temperature requirements, or equipment that limits access to certain areas, mention it early. The system design for a single-floor facility with wide aisles is different from one built around narrow racks and mezzanines. A few photos or a simple floor plan can save a lot of back-and-forth later.

Finally, think about the people who will interact with the system. How many operators work per shift? Do they rotate between stations? Is there an existing IT team that can handle basic maintenance, or will the system need to be fully managed remotely? These operational details shape the interface, the training plan, and the support model. A consultation that starts with this level of specificity moves faster and leads to a proposal that actually fits.

If you are unsure what to include, start with the three items: current systems, SKU count, and recurring issues. That alone is enough for a productive first conversation.
